Foundations of Neonatal Care, a didactic competency-based orientation (CBO) program, is designed to adapt to the orientee’s past experience and self-evaluation to master core competencies essential to caring for ill infants. The CBO program includes checklists and performance criteria for the clinical portion and slideshow modules and notes for the classroom or independent learning portion.

Competency-based orientation expanded manual and checklist
The competency-based expanded manual describes the performance criteria and the checklist is an accompanying tool to record progress. As the orientee completes or practices the skills under the performance criteria column, the preceptor initials the column on the master checklist. The orientee is expected to perform competently on the core competencies and inform preceptors of learning needs to achieve performance criteria.

The timeline includes objectives, suggestions for patient assignments, and order of competency based orientation modules. CBO is based on the orientee’s learning need; this is a framework for designing individual plans.

Assignment request
A tool designed to request a specific skill or type of patient assignment to help meet the performance criteria on the CBO checklist. It is used as a communication tool for the person who is making shift assignments.

Organization checklist
A scavenger hunt to familiarize the orientee with the unit layout and where to find supplies. The orientee can work independently and with the preceptor.

Routines in the neonatal intensive care unit
This form is designed to be completed by the orientee and preceptor together to acclimate the orientee to the unit.

Evaluation tools
An evaluation tool to monitor orientee and preceptor progress which can be used as needed or on a routine basis such as initial, midpoint, and final evaluations.
